Special Delivery for Team Ireland 40k!
Feb 17th
So awhile back, I was tasked by fearless Captain Tangney to go about getting sponsorship for this years 40k team. I wasn’t given any strict guidelines as to what form this would take so I stuck my thinking cap on!
My thought process took me through all the logical things that could be done, but then Caolan Gibbons and his crew were doing an awesome job on that front already. Gaming supplies, thats the kind of stuff that every good team needs. I was always jealous of guys like the German and US teams that got their own army cases because of some sponsorship deal or other, so with an eye to dreaming big I went out to get some gear that would hopefully do all the work that Mike, Caolan, Nigel and all of the other guys were doing behind the scenes to get the team off the ground
With that in mind I pretty much went straight to the top of the tree gear wise (at least in this humble authors opinion) and mailed the good people of portable warfare http://www.portablewarfare.com/ a few years back I’d been given a present of one of their Sergeant army transports and have been extremely happy toting my dark eldar army in it ever since. I guessed the worst thing that could happen was that they’d say no…which to my eternal gratitude they did not. So I’m extremely happy to publicly announce that team Ireland 40k has taken delivery of a set of Sergeant army transports that the team will be proudly using at both the Home Nations Tournament and at the ETC itself!!! Many thanks to all involved particularly Chris Strecker at Portable for all his help, looking forward to getting up many a picture of the team toting the gear but for now I’ll leave you with a taster

Get behind your team!!!

Team Ireland 40k update – from Captain Mike
Dec 21st
Hi all,
I wanted to touch base with everyone to let you all know what we have been up to!
The European Team Championships, to me, are an extension of our love for our hobby. A chance for us to demonstrate what a great gaming scene we have in Ireland and allow us to make friends with gamers from all over the world. As captain, it’s my privilege to put together a team that represents the best of the Irish gaming scene. Great Gamers, who love a bit of banter(read also beer) while playing for their country. Pretty Cool!
With all this in mind I’ve assembled a panel of people from all over the country to help get the best team going and support this team in any and all ways possible.
So far the Team Ireland Panel has:
- Held a number of small-scale fundraising events at events around the country including range guessing at Conspiracy, Dominicon’s arena of Death and Moocons raffles
- Submitted our own mission pack for consideration for use at the event itself!
- Secured sponsorship for the team from a number of quarters to make sure that our teams are supported as much as possible in going to the event in Poland. The IGA in particular must get a call out for their support – Thanks again guys
- In regards to making sure that the Irish team all look the part we held an open design competition to help Team Ireland “look the part” in Poland with the coolest looking t-shirts around (you’ll be able to vote on the finalists soon so watch this space)
- Identified a supplier for Team Ireland Bags
- We will also be looking for Dice designs pretty soon
- Accommodation for the team is sorted in both Poland and UK
- Analysis, List design and rules querying really kick off in a big way in the new year.
All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the time and effort of the panel and there’s still a whole lot more to be done.
If you want to offer help sign up here – http://www.w-ired.org/forum/
Also, if you see me or anyone else involved with the panel at events, make yourself known! Part of my goal as captain is to ensure we utilize the talents of everyone in our community to make sure that YOUR team is the best it can be.
This is a small gaming community so we are really going to need an army of list play testers in the coming weeks once the rulespacks are decided upon.
Keep an eye out for some team tournaments in the new year too! Rumours of events in each of Dublin/Cork and maybe even Galway abound so stay tuned… team events add a whole extra level of fun. Nothing like being able to pat a team mate on the back for saving your bacon ‘cos ”that dice just kept rolling 1’s”
Lastly to let you know what’s coming up in the new year.
- ·Expect to hear from me a little more often as we get into crunch time!
- We have the final few rounds of qualifying so if you want a space on the team make the best case possible!
- Team announcements will be made in early April
- The inaugural border shield will be on the 7th April as we host Team Northern Ireland
- The 6 Nations (now including Belgium) will be held at the end of April
Anyway folks you’ll be hearing from me from time to time about what we have planned, how its all progressing and how you can help us. Until then take care and heres to rolling the dice for team Ireland in 2012!!!

The Road to Geneva part deux
Oct 13th
So I went to the NWG tournament last weekend and officially kicked off my qualifying campaign with little success. Now don’t take that the wrong way, I was at a tournament for a system with only two previous games under my belt and no experience at all with the army I am playing with. Yet for some inexplicable reason and without taking the extra nine points I was offered (I was the only person to play the ‘Buy Ball’ all others were given an automatic 15-5 god I hate pride lol.) I didn’t come last, not far off right enough but not last. I won’t go into the full details of my games, mainly because after Saturday night the first three are a blur. However here goes,
First up was Dave Wade and his High Elves, a fellow Northernwaster so we had a friendly easy game to slip into the tournament unfortunately it resulted in a 20-0 win for Dave
Game Two was my ‘Buy ball’ against Nigel and his elves which resulted in another loss of 13-7 the most memorable moment being the final combat where his Dragon princes charged my bell and clanrat unit, who were unfortunately sitting at -1 strength and -1 toughness
Game Three was Sofian and his woodelves, who thanks to his deploying as far away as huamnly possible resulted in an 11-9 loss
Then came the drinking…………….?
With a surprisingly small hangover and the attention span of a Goldfish, I started the second day against Jason Finnegan and his Empire, the final result was 14-6 to him and I would like to apologize for such a crap game, let this be a lesson to you all about the horrors of the ‘Devils Buttermilk’ (Whoever can name the original speaker of that quote wins a prize, answers on a postcard please*)
My final game was against Mal’s VC unfortunately we only got to turn four, and after working out the possibilities of ensuing combats called it an amicable 10-10
So we are off and running and from here the only way is up. Apart from a small blip on the Sunday morning my scores got progressively better, so here’s to the future
While I am here I would like to thank Nigel for organising a great Tournament and I would also like to thank all the people I came into contact with for making an old school 40k player welcome.

European Team Championship 2010
Aug 4th
This is the big one. The best players from over thirty countries representing their nation and playing for the honour of the best Warhammer Fantasy country and the best Warhammer 40k country. For many, this is the pinnacle of gaming. Playing for your country as part of a team in a foreign land…gaming doesn’t get much more fun or at a higher standard than this.
Team Ireland WHFB are attending for the second year in succession, with Team Ireland 40k making their debut. Northern Ireland are also represented by teams for both systems. The Irish 40k team have set the bar high, by winning the 2010 Six Nations event in Cardiff – beating England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Barbarians along the way. They have to be considered one of the contenders for the overall title, but the competition will be tougher in Germany. Team WHFB finished last in the 2009 Four Nations, last in the 2009 ETC and last in the 2010 Six Nations. However, they are optimistic that they can break this run in Germany.
Qualification for the Irish 40k team began in autumn 2009 when I entered a team in the competition. All I needed now was, well, a team. I approached as many people as I knew and, taking advice on board, approached four clubs to ask them to each put forward one player who would be automatically on the team – earning a “golden ticket”. Immediately, I asked the four “golden tickets” to commit to being part of Team Ireland 40k and to vote on a captain. The reason I chose four was to ensure that we had a team. Under ETC rules, you need four players from one country to make a team (the other four could be ringers). I chose four from different clubs for inclusivity. The remaining four would be chosen from the rankings system that I set up (based on the international RHQ system). So, way back in the depths of 2009 Paul was voted in as team captain and I took my leave – just helping with the rankings, advising and so on.
Later in 2009, Declan withdrew and appointed Stuart from the Drogs in his place. The team were happy enough with this. Unfortunately, Stuart asked to be removed from the team a couple of months ago. There appeared to be no Drog to take his place, leaving the team in a bit of a sticky patch. The three remaining “golden tickets” agreed to try sort this asap and Richard Flood was brought on board.
The Irish Warhammer 40k team is Paul Quigley (Captain), Joe Cullen, Jimmy Murphy, Richard Flood, Darragh Cullen, Paraic O’Confhaola, Cian O’Dowd and Barra Macniocaill.
The Irish Warhammer team was chosen as follows. I automatically qualified as I was voted Team Captain 2010 by the 2009 team. Mal Cooney automatically qualified as Vice-Captain as he was the 2009 captain. Brian Leonard, Alan Woods-Conway and Ciarán Dunne qualified by being part of the 2009 team and finishing in the top eight of the rankings. Dave Leahy and Ken Chambers qualified directly through the rankings and Halaigh Whelan-McManus qualified as the wild-card, voted on by the seven players.
Regardless, everyone is looking forward to competing in Munster, and we hope that we can continue the development and progression of wargaming in Ireland!
