So awhile back, I was tasked by fearless Captain Tangney to go about getting sponsorship for this years 40k team. I wasn’t given any strict guidelines as to what form this would take so I stuck my thinking cap on!

My thought process took me through all the logical things that could be done, but then Caolan Gibbons and his crew were doing an awesome job on that front already. Gaming supplies, thats the kind of stuff that every good team needs. I was always jealous of guys like the German and US teams that got their own army cases because of some sponsorship deal or other, so with an eye to dreaming big I went out to get some gear that would hopefully do all the work that Mike, Caolan, Nigel and all of the other guys were doing behind the scenes to get the team off the ground

With that in mind I pretty much went straight to the top of the tree gear wise (at least in this humble authors opinion) and mailed the good people of portable warfare http://www.portablewarfare.com/ a few years back I’d been given a present of one of their Sergeant army transports and have been extremely happy toting my dark eldar army in it ever since. I guessed the worst thing that could happen was that they’d say no…which to my eternal gratitude they did not. So I’m extremely happy to publicly announce that team Ireland 40k has taken delivery of a set of Sergeant army transports that the team will be proudly using at both the Home Nations Tournament and at the ETC itself!!! Many thanks to all involved particularly Chris Strecker at Portable for all his help, looking forward to getting up many a picture of the team toting the gear but for now I’ll leave you with a taster

Get behind your team!!!

Using alternative miniatures in your games!

- by James Carey

Time has passed since the early days of miniature gaming, when Games Workshop effectively stood alone in miniature gaming. Since the early days of Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader and the Warhammer Fantasy Role Play Mass Combat game, many things have changed. For one, Games Workshop are now a commercial juggernaught. Still a leader in their field and turning profits in a recession, there are so many mainstream commercial enterprises which are falling on hard times (HMV) or as we all know too well are gone altogether.

While GW has undoubtedly changed in the last fifteen or so years, so have many other things in gaming. Other companies have surfaced some have come and gone while others, like Privateer Press, Corvus Belli, Mantic games, Rackham, Warlord Games, and Mongoose Publishing to name a few have surfaced. Some have had a massive impact on the hobby on a world-wide scale, bringing something new and special to the hobby, for the benefit of all! Maybe doing GW the favour of providing some healthy competition. Unfortunately, some have faded into the mists of obscurity for all time*.

So with many other companies, new and old, producing models in a varied range including historical, fantasy, science fiction, and alternative history, the modern gamer has a wide amount of choice for alternative toy soldiers to really personalise their own armies.

Personally, I have always liked to use models from the same company, regardless of game, in my armies for conversions or even simply alternative models. Over time though, this has changed slightly, but my own reason for doing so was because I felt the consistent look with the same scale and sculptors across the ranges, primarily with my GW armies seemed somehow more fitting. While I have become more lax with this on account of more products being available to me I still retain this mentality with Privateer Press games, mainly because that particular line and gaming world is so unique. In contrast, you could easily use some generic sci-fi soldiers or even WW2 models as Imperial Guard regiments for Warhammer (if the scale is right, in my humble opinion…), it is very hard to find an alternative for Cryx Bonejacks or Cyngar Stormblades.

Now, we come full circle. The tournament scene in Ireland has exploded in the last few years. People are travelling to more events, the internet has become a very useful communications tool for advertising tournaments and interaction between gamers who normally would not get the chance to talk all that much. While I miss Games Workshop running tournaments in Ireland, I think it is a very good thing that there are independently run tournaments by gamers, for gamers. A major problem I always had with the Games Workshop tournament pack was models had to be GW. This used to be the model having to be at least 50% GW. I heard recently that this percentage has increased. ‘Terrible’ is the word I would use to describe this rule.

I remember a few years back a GW tournament in Limerick where a local (at the time) from the Gathering used a Feral Ork army, using large dinosaur models as his Squiggoths and converting them. He had two in the army if I recall correctly. Long story short, he was told he couldn’t use them as they were not 50% GW, and part of them were scratch built. So, this cool, unique army was not allowed to play! I don’t know if this guy stopped playing because of this, but within a few months he had stopped visiting into the shop, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him at a con or a tournament since. I’d imagine that these two things are related. I could be wrong, in fact I hope I’m wrong but due to this silly rule, a unique army has been lost to the gaming scene, and now Ireland is down one gamer.

Anyway, let’s try and keep it positive, and less about anger at big businesses and their brain-dead policies. Mantic games have released their Space Dwarves**, and they are very, very nice. What the hell, they are awesome. Buy them, use them as Forge Fathers in Warpath, and get friends in your gaming group interested by getting the local Space Ork player to bring along his models to use as Warpath Orx***, so nobody else has to spend money if they don’t want to. Then, use your Space Dwarves as Space Marines, in independently run tournaments, where it will be allowed. So now, you have saved money with less expensive models, have an army for two games, and in one game, a very unique looking Space Marine army.

I hope you enjoyed reading this article, and hope it didn’t come across as a jumbled mess with no direction in its writing, or a shameless plug of my own political opinion/agenda. Vote Republican! Gingrich 2012

Remember: Violence is never the answer, unless the question is ‘What is not the answer?’

*Rest in peace, Starship Troopers. Your time with us, though short, is fondly remembered.

**Pronounced ‘Forge Fathers’

***Pronounced ‘Orcs’

The rulespacks and so on are currently been worked on, and we expect to be able to release them pretty soon. Darragh Cullen from the DGG will be running the 40k side of things, while I’ll be heading up the Fantasy organisers with Fergus and Jarvis.

Accommodation is available in the hotel itself, and we’re currently working on block-booking the Loch gCarman Arms Hotel in the town as well for a budget option.

From a 40k perspective, some of the biggest names will be attending. We’re putting in Darragh Cullen as early favourite, with Paul Quigley in with a great chance. We know that nominating two Dubs to win a Cork event will be contentious, and it will be up to Floody and Mervyn to prove us wrong! We understand that another Black Templar Crusade has been called, so expect to see Shane, John and Karl rocking some of the more interesting Space Marines.

In Fantasy, it seems likely that only a couple from the top sixteen in the rankings will miss out. Barry Lynch and his Skaven must be considered one of the strongest candidates, but it’d be folly to rule out Rob Gleasure (reigning Warpcon champion and number one in the rankings) on his home turf or Ken Chambers (ETC team captain 2011 and 2010 Warhammer Master). Lenny, Mal and Jay will also be in the running – as may Gary Griffin.

Friday night will see a Malifaux event kick off around 9pm, while the usual pints and chat will doubtless be enjoyed throughout the entire weekend.

We’re looking forward to this, and expect to improve our Twitter service for those interested in keeping up to date with events.

1.Tournament outline:
7th November, 2010
1750 pts Armies, Standard Force Organization Chart.
Armies should be fully painted and be WYSIWYG.
Players will be matched by swiss system (first round is random).
Battles have max 2,5h and take place on 72″x 48″ tables
Location of the venue is Michelin Athletic Club, 30 Woodside Road, Ballymena, County Antrim BT42 4HX

2.General Rules:
We play with the 5th edition of the Warhammer 40000 rules without any add-on. Imperial Armour, Forgeworld or Apocalypse rules are not allowed.
English version of army books and rulebook takes priority over other versions.
Each player must have all codices and rules they’re using, army roster, dices, measure tape and templates.
All official FAQ and Euro Rules Clarifications are in use. The Rules clarifications can be found here: http://warhammer.org.uk/phpBB/viewtopic … 19&t=73405

3. Army lists limitations:
All special and named characters are banned.
Allies are not allowed, unless you are playing a Daemonhunters or Witch Hunters army in which case you may use the allies rules as described in your codex.
The following codices may be used:
- Codex: Chaos Space Marines
- Codex: Daemonhunters
- Codex: Dark Eldar (the old book, not the one due out in Nov 2010)
- DE: Wych Cult
- Codex: Eldar
- Codex: Imperial Guard
- Codex: Necrons
- Codex: Orks
- Codex: Space Marines
- Codex: Blood Angels
- Codex: Dark Angels
- Codex: Black Templars
- Codex: Space Wolves
- Codex: Tau Empire
- Codex: Tyranids
- Codex: Witch Hunters
- Codex Daemons

4. Tournament points:

Each player will receive a score from 0 – 100 Tournament Points as follows:

Gaming: 0 – 60 TPs
Painting: 0 or 30 TPs
List: 0 or 10 TPs

4.1 Gaming:

There will be 3 rounds of gaming. In the first round players will be randomly paired (though we will try to avoid pairing players from the same club where possible), while in the subsequent rounds the Swiss Chess System will be used. Each game will be played using the rulebook missions and deployments. Each type of mission and deployment will be used once, and will be randomly determined for each round (we’ll get someone to roll a big dice before each round and everyone will play that one).

Gaming points
First step – decide who is the winner based on rulebook rules. The result is always 15 (winner) : 5 (loser). If it’s tied on the objectives both players recieve 10.

Second step
Compute Victory Points (VP) difference. The player having the VP difference in his favour gets a bonus, the other one gets a malus.
Difference in vps / game points bonus / malus
1450-1750 / +5 / -5
1150-1449 / +4 / -4
850-1149 / +3 / -3
550-849 / +2 / -2
250-549 / +1 / -1
0-249 / no bonus & malus for vps

To sum up, the result consists of points awarded for objectives (win = 15, tie = 10, loss = 5, see step 1), plus or minus a bonus or malus due to Victory Points (see step 2).

4.2 Painting:

If EVERY MODEL in your army is painted, based and WYSIWYG then you will receive 30 points, otherwise you will receive 0 points. Each model should be painted in at least 3 colours (properly painted not just randomly splashed with 3 different colours).
Each model should have a textured and painted base of the correct size.
All models must be WYSIWYG. Non-GW, heavily converted and scratch built models are welcome, but they should be easily identifiable. Forgeworld and special character models can be used to represent other models.

4.3 List:
If you submit your Army list by 31st October, 2010, you will receive 10 points.
Please email your list to northernwasters@gmail.com in the following format:

5. Prizes:
There will be trophies for the following:
1st – The player with the most TPs
2nd – The player with the 2nd highest TP total
3rd – The player with the 3rd highest TP total
Best Army – As voted by the players
Best Battlefield – As voted by the players

There will also be a variety of other spot prizes etc.

6. Best Battlefield:
Best Battlefield is a new award, which a player/club/team can choose to enter. Entrants will supply and place the scenery on one of the tables. The prize will be equivalent to the Best Army prize and players will vote in the same way, choosing their favourite battlefield based on how well it looks, and how much fun it would be to play on it. The award is intended to give the scenery makers a chance to show off their skills and also to make things a bit easier for the organisers.

The referee will check each board to make sure that it is playable. Any that aren’t will be adjusted by the player or ref. As a rough guide, terrain should cover around 25% of the board and about a third of it should block LoS.

7. Rankings:
DD3 will count towards the Irish Rankings, and TNI Rankings.

8. Tickets:
Tickets are £15 and are available in person from Jonny, Matt or Ivan (you can find us at the club, NWG tournament or Gaelcon), or by sending by Paypal to northernwasters@gmail.com The ticket price includes entry to the event and tea, coffee and snacks all day.

9. Registration:
There are 24 places available. You can reserve a place by emailing northernwasters@gmail.com, with the following information:
Name:
Army:
Club:
Mobile Number:
***Please let us know in the email if you will be entering the Best Battlefield competition and/or you’d like to be a player ref***

We may be able to increase the number of places if necessary, but that will depend upon getting enough players to enter the Best Battlefield competition.

10. Player Referees:
To give players more opportunities to qualify for the ETC team, NW/TNI 40K events will be organised by WFB players and vice-versa. To assist the organisers, we will require some experienced players to act as player-refs. We’d ideally like one or two from each club. The player-refs will not make rules calls in their own or their clubmates’ games.

11. Timetable (subject to change)
9am – Doors open (Best Battlefield entrants should set up their table)
9:30 to 10 Registration
10 to 12:30 – Game 1
12:30 to 1 – Break
1 to 3:30 – Game 2
3:30 to 4:30 – Break
4:30 to 7 – Game 3
7 to 7:30 – Counting up and Prizes

I don’t think I’d use these much in a single game, but at a tournament they’re a life saver. After 3 games it can be tough to remember your name let alone which one of the 13 dark eldar skimmers is immobilised and which is weapon destroyed etc.

Inspired by the counters for the ETC I did up a set of markers for explosions on my Ork vehicles. It was very handy to be able to put down somethign that can act as a crater after teh trukk blows up and kills everyone

So we are heading into another tournament season. I have my list made out and a booking made to fly home for Gorey. I just need my holidays confirmed now and I am off. This whole travelling home for a tournament though isn’t ideal. While it gets me home for a few days which is always appreciated its expensive. The local tournaments are slowly becoming more and more attractive! There are quite a few around Germany thankfully the only problem is getting a seat in a car as the train is pretty pricey… more than a ryanair flight at the moment! I shouldn’t really talk about Aer Lingus at all as their prices are amazing.

So I was wondering why we are not offering some other international tournaments as ranking events? I know it is done by our Northern Neighbours. We have the Giant Fanatic coming up in Denmark which I am itching to go to but I don’t know if I will have a useable army by that stage. There are a bucket load of tournaments in England that would be fun to attend. However rather than just suiting me I think this could only be a good thing. I know it is difficult to sell to our significant others as they believe we are just heading off for a weekend of debauchery rather than the gaming. However I think that this would be the amazing for our preformance as a team in the ETC. You know it is easy to be a big fish in a small pond. If we can get some serious gaming in against the top players in Europe on a more regular basis it can only be good. The weekends at home that are outside Dublin are pretty expensive and it wouldn’t be really that more more to jet off somewhere. This should hone the team and maybe enable us to once again improve our preformance. One other thing to consider is inviting a team from another country to come over. It would be nice to have four or five of the english guys over for one of our two day tournaments. We could easily subsidise their tickets. Better yet we should just let them in for free. The invites could be extended to a few of the other European Nations that our ETC team have befriended. I am not sure how this ranking HQ thing works. It may be that if the tournaments are in different countries they will automatically combine the results? If not it can’t be too hard to have that implemented.

It also has the benefit that we can concentrate on providing fewer better tournaments at home. One thing I noticed is a two tier tournament system developping. Well it has been there for a while but it seemed to become more stark last year. We have the better (in my opinion) tournaments that are organised by the dedicated gamers from a club with the clubs support behind them. The tournaments I particularly enjoyed were Resurgence and Battlecry. The organisers were dedicated to providing a good fun day out. They knew they would get numbers though and so that provides a safety zone. The second tier seems to be shoddily organised, thrown together at an after thought and then applying for ranking status to get a few more numbers in. As I saw when travelling home to play in one of these events… three people turned up. Well that was a bit of a let down. It would be cool if we could (I could!) really have four premium events organised well in advance, organised well in advance and then we can look further afield to supplement these.

Ok the deathrolla’s been around for a while.

The FAQ clarifying the ramming has been around for a while.

But I only started playing with them in my army recently.
Set in my ways? me? nah.

Since starting to use ‘em I’ve discovered that they do kinda strain some of the 40K base rules and more importantly it’s easy to mis-use them. The sections of rules that they are working from are generally sideline. Lots of players will play for months, never carry out a ram attack or a tankshock.

So I figure a quick 101 might be useful.

Before going any further grab your rules and read the tankshock and ramming section. Yes RTFM. It’s the best way to learn. Think yourself lucky you’ve got a rulebook, in my day you had a rulebook and 20 White Dwarf updates. <grumble>

So all ready?
STEP 1
Lets have a squint at the deathroller in basic mode.
Tank shock or ram a unit and in addition to the normal rules, there are D6 str 10 hits.

Things to remember

The units hit still get armour saves

Str 10 instakills lots of stuff

Low Ld armies do not like having to take Ld tests

STEP 2
Slightly more complicated mode.
The unit decides to death or glory.
Things to remember

Take your Ld test before declaring your death or glory

Only models that were rolled can elect to death or glory

The unit takes 2D6 Str 10 hits, even if it stops the battlewagon

The Gloryhog has to stop the battlewagon moving or die. There is a reason tankers call infantry “squishies”

Only models being rolled getting the glory option is why Ork players tend to try and snipe a model that doesn’t have any nasty meltabombs or stuff like that.

There’s a bit of debate on how the instakill and the 2D6 work. As far as I’ve been able to figure it’s all simultaneous.
This means you have to use wound allocation.

1 SQUISH on the Gloryhog( if it fails)

2D6 str 10 on the unit

So depending on the unit size and number of hits the wounds can wrap around.
“Why do I care it’s all instakill ?” Well if you’ve an IC in the unit you’re probably going to want to try and keep them alive or limit the wounds they take.

STEP 3
Ram a vehicle
Things to remember

Hits are against the facing of the target you’re ramming.

You have to blow the rammed vehicle up or you stop moving.

If you pop a transport you’ll get to roll over the contents as well.

“What cheese is this Murphy!?!” I hear you ask.
The reason you get to squish the contents as well as the can are as follows.
Exploded vehicles drop their transported unit where the vehicle was.
Unless you’re just clipping the vehicle or your opponent gets lucky they will not be able to put the squad in that footprint without getting tankshocked.
The tankshock rule states that all units get hit, you don’t have to target them.

STEP 4

Things to remember

Walkers are different ( of course)

Treated as infantry with Ld except if you hit ‘em from behind it can’t death or glory

If it fails a death or glory it gets it in the rear armour

Imagine, 20 boys in a battle wagon trying to sneak around the back of a dreadnought going “Shush, I don’t think he’s seen us. Get ready…. ready….. floor it!!”

General tips

I recommend pivoting the ramming vehicle, and then measuring but not actually moving anything until you work out all the effects.

Remember to take your difficult terrain checks going over debris.

Only the models that would be under the rammer/tankshocker at the END of the move must be moved out of the way. 1″ from enemy units, shortest distance and preserve coherency.

Remember that technically you cannot even move other models in the affected squad as that can make a big difference to where the displaced models can go.

I have no idea what to do if you tankshock in such a way that you might break a squad coherency. It hasn’t happened so far for me so I’ll cross my fingers.

That’s it folks the quick guide to Rolla’s

So what did I miss? Reply below————–

In particular, what I really like is that there’s always something new, whether a new army to collect, new rulebooks to explore, experimenting with a new painting technique, trying out some new tactics for your army or a new player who’s appeared at your club to get to know. There’s always more to do.

So much to do, in fact. There’s never enough time to get everything done.

Now is actually a very interesting time to be involved. Recent years have provided us with plenty of new releases and there’s always something for everyone.

The classic Warhammer game has recently seen the release of it’s 8th edition rulebook. Warhammer : Islands of Blood is soon to follow in September. The new boxed game features some fantastic new miniatures, and the new rules should require players to rethink their army compositions to fit better with the new rules. The only question is whether to start of a new army or upgrade your current army to fit into the new rules and army compositions.

Of course, we also can’t ignore the futuristic cousin, Warhammer 40,000. While the current ruleset is not new, there’s always a new Codex just around the corner, and of course, new models to go with it.

For the historical buffs among you, a relatively recent release was the 2nd edition of the Warhammer Ancient Battles ruleset. I got my hands on the book recently, it’s very nicely put together. The game has diverged in rules from it’s Fantasy counterpart, but most long term Warhammer players will see rules from previous editions still present in the historical rules.

Privateer Press fans are certainly having a busy year. The release of Warmachine : Prime MKII has been well recieved and all of the Forces of Warmachine books are now available. Hot on the heels of all this is the upcoming release of HORDES : Primal MKII as well as the series of Forces of HORDES books due for each faction, as well as the first chance for HORDES players to use an all Minion force (along the lines of the all Mercenary armies from Warmachine.)

The new kid on the wargames block in the last year has been the skirmish game Malifaux. I don’t know a huge amount about Malifaux as I’ve resisted buying it so far, it seems to be proving rather popular among those who have collected factions, and the miniatures are really excellent. Time will tell.

But which one to choose. Should I add to my Dark Elves and Dwarfs, or start a High Elf army? Finish my Flesh Tearers or mech up my existing Crimson Fists army? Paint a Roman force for WAB? Continue with my Protectorate of Menoth force or break out the Skorne figures in the box for the HORDES release? Start playing Specialist Games again? Try Malifaux? The choices are endless.

So much to do, so little time.
