I didn't play 40K back then but from what I understand it turned into a bit of a camp fest where nobody wanted to move around and everybody was over-watching.

In Infinity that doesn't happen for a couple of reasons:
1 - You still have the advantage in your active turn. For example you get the full burst of your weapon in firing, which may be 2, 3 or even 4 shots, and your opponent only gets burst 1 in reaction.
2 - You get to use manoeuvre in your active turn while you are largely stationary (except for the odd 2 or 3" dodge move) in the reactive turn. Thus you can manoeuvre to try and ensure advantageous match ups in your active turn - i.e. take on the sniper from up close with your rifle, or take on the rifle from far away with your sniper rifle. Additionally you can flank them to deny them cover while ensuring you have it yourself or even better (and harder) to take them from behind (oooerrr!) and ensure they don't get to react.
3 - terrain. This is why Infinity needs good terrain that blocks line of sight, and lots of it. If it is a typical 40K style board it will be a sniper-fest of annoyance for everybody. That's doing it wrong though, though admittedly it's a mistake that people (including me) used to 40K typically make at first.

In Force on Force the system's excellent use of bounding over-watch prevents this. This is the modern combat tactic of - fire team A provides covering fire (overwatch) while fire team B advances, teams then swap roles and repeat.

So in Force on Force you typically put a unit on over-watch and then can advance with another unit that it is protecting. If your opponent reacts then the over-watching unit gets to fire first if they simply roll a 4+ on a D8, D10 or even D12 depending on their troop quality.

Now that sounds clear-cut and simple but the problem is getting the over-watch unit into position where it can usefully over-watch. You're not allowed move and over-warch in Force on Force, so again it's down to manoeuvre and tactics. Which is fun.

Oh yes, and additionally Force on Force is completely scenario based. So you're welcome to sit your corner for the whole game but you're guaranteed a loss for doing it, well, unless that's your scenario objective! Which it could be, but then your opponent will vastly out-number you.

Infinity also is also best with scenarios.

For many of us, the whole idea of "doing stuff in your opponent's turn" brings back memories of older versions of Overwatch in WH40k. Sadly, they're not good memories, as it served to utterly stymie many games.

How have these games avoided this?

Hey guys-

Just a few notes:
The date is wrong- it's from the 31st of March until the 1st of April.
There's also an Infinity tournament and I'm looking into Warmachine and Hordes tournament also.

A big hello and we would like to take the opportunity to make you aware of a active GW gaming community locally. The North Down Gamers Hub or the NDGH for short, is a new gaming Hub based in Bangor County Down Northern Ireland. Its purpose is to cater and promote all aspects of gaming from tabletop to console. Our plans initially are to meet on a monthly basis which in turn will hopefully unite the local gaming community by providing them with a venue to meet with similar people with the same interests as ourselves in a environment, which in turn promotes our gaming hobby.

Also we are looking to host our own events like tournaments etc so to keep yourself up to date please check out North Down Gamers Hub on Facebook and like to keep yourself up to date.

All being well I'll hear from you soon.

Sounds like good craic. Campaigns really are a lot of work, but can be mighty craic when it all works. We're a few weeks into ours, you can see the progress here if you're so inclined:

a bit harsh there redmanphill - I think it would be fine as a 'counts as' steam tank - Would also make awesome unit filler for a halberd horde....

Handgunners are great there is an upgrade kit due for state troops very soon

Hmmm the Land Train is far larger than a Steam Tank at least in terms of the foot print. So I would be a little reticent to have this in a tournament. Fine for friendly games however.

I love the handgunners, these will really make for nice looking detachments and regiments. I hope they come out with more!

Possibly, it's up for review along with Warhammer Forge. We'd like to include Chaos Dwarfs and WF models, but we need to ensure that it doesn't throw balance out of whack. More information on our forum - http://w-ired.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1278

I have a very similar case for my Guard. Only thing that bugs me is that their bayonets get caught in the foam very easily and can get damaged.

Apart from that though its great.

Jimmy, would you say they would be worth bulk ordering a few, or just 1 at a time?
They seem like a goer to me, if they sell the foam or find compatible foam, I could see these replacing 5 army cases.

Terrific review, sir, thank you. You did not touch on two critical details I would like: what is the carryall's price and where can one be had (URL?). Much thanks!

So ....results????

I heard Joe Cullen managed to snag a first place in 40K with Dork Angles but that the home ground advantage went with Rob G on the defence of his Warpcrown.

Yea they seem to be much more common. I suppose it's helped by there being a prize for it at ARC.
I'm considering a magnetised one myself to save on the packing and unpacking between games.
The battlefoam xtray looks like it might be a good basic standard to work from

Glad you had a great time Jimmy. The look onyour face when Mark said "he had toget a passport to play here" about a hundred places earlier than you were expecting was priceless.
