Warhammer is a game of warfare in the Old World fantasy setting. In your games, serried ranks of troops march to war while dragons fly overhead breathing fire on the enemy. Cannons and Bolt Throwers pound the enemy lines while wizards cast spectacular spells to change the course of battle. Units of Knights charge in the face of hails of arrows and crossbow bolts, while heroes rally troops to their standard and generals maneouvre their forces to best effect.
The forces of good include the Empire – a strange land of people who are steeped in superstition and have just a little steampunk flavour and Bretonnians – brave Knights who search for the Grail under the Lady’s blessing alongside the peasants who serve them. High Elves are noble and arrogant and masters of magic, while Wood Elves are masters of archery but live solitary lives in the Forests of Loren and call the very spirits of the woods to fight with them. Lizardmen protect their ancient interests in th
e jungles of Lustria while stubborn Dwarfs bend magic into their very weapons and are the lords of artillery in their impregnable mountain holds.
But that’s not all. The forces of darkness are strong here too – the evil Dark Elves, bitter and twisted cousins of the other Elves who sail on Black Fleets bringing despair and death at the end of their monstrous animals and crossbow bolts; the insidious Skaven, mutant ratmen whose hordes and bizarre magic contraptions overwhelm all enemies and the Orcs and Goblins – numerous and crazy, they live for the fight against their enemies or themselves.
From an even darker path step the forces of Chaos. In the magical north, tribes of humans worship the Dark Gods and benefit from their blessings, marching south as the Warriors of Chaos. From the depths of the woods, Beastmen rut and fight and drink as they plan the downfall of mankind. And where the veneer of normality wears the Daemons of Chaos arise – foul creatures from the depths of hell itself.
In the Old World, the dead rest uneasily. Vampire Counts from Sylvania raise the recently deceased and bend them to their will while wolves and bats flock to their banner. In the deserts of Khemri, the dead population of ancient cities walk the ruins of their forgotten empire and march to battle under the Tomb Kings guidance.
In Warhammer, each player takes control of an army of several units and some special characters, heroes and warmachines and attempts to beat his opponent through strategic movement, awesome spells and firepower…and cataclysmic combat.
